Home Learning

Purpose of Home Learning

Home learning is used as an opportunity for our pupils to consolidate learning already acquired through the delivery of the curriculum. It allows pupils to review and practice what they have learned in their lesson, reinforcing the content and helping to support long term memory. It can prepare pupils for upcoming topics, ensuring that they have the necessary background knowledge to understand the new material. Not only that, it develops essential skills such as time management, organisation, problem solving and independent thinking.

What Home Learning looks like at Wanstead High School?

Reading: Pupils will have an opportunity to do wider reading that helps deepen their understanding of the content or introduce them to new ideas and concepts that will be built on in lesson.

Revision: This is an effective retrieval activity that requires pupils to test themselves on material they have learned.

Practice: Pupils will have the opportunity to master the procedural knowledge – the knowledge of how to perform a specific skill or task. This is a consolidation task where pupils need to be able to apply their knowledge that has been made to stick in their long-term memory.

Preparation: Pupils are introduced to learning material before their lesson. This aids to deepen their understanding as teachers prioritise active learning in the classroom.

Extension: Pupils will have the opportunity to investigate key topics and work on a piece of work over a period of time.

Technology apps: Pupils have the opportunity to consolidate the learning that they have done in lessons using platforms like Seneca and Sparx Maths.

How is Home Learning set?

All home learning is set on Google Classroom. Teachers assign tasks via the technology apps.

How often is Home Learning set?

Key Stage 3 pupils are set home learning once a fortnight in most of their subjects. In the creative areas they are assigned one task a half term.

Key Stage 4 pupils are set weekly home learning in subjects that they are studying.

All pupils that study maths will receive weekly home learning.

SparxMaths

www.sparxmaths.uk

Sparx learning is an online maths platform used to set maths home learning at Wanstead High School.

Pupils complete tasks based on previous learning they have done in the classroom. Each task has a short supporting video if pupils are in need of support. Sparx Maths will adapt the number and the difficulty of tasks for each pupil, so each pupil gets one hour of home learning a week.

Pupils are able to watch the video multiple times, retake the quiz, and leave comments that go directly to their maths teacher.

Seneca

https://senecalearning.com

Seneca is an online platform that helps to consolidate pupil’s learning. It provides summaries, videos, notes and a plethora of practice questions. The system is also completely adaptive, so our pupil’s learning experience will be tailored to suit their individual needs.
