At Wanstead High we believe that all members of our school community; staff, school leaders, pupils and parents/carers, have a shared responsibility in promoting and sustaining the highest standards of behaviour and character.  We have three simple but important rules that are in place to keep our school community and environment safe, calm and purposeful.

In partnership with parents and carers, we aim to support pupils in the development of desirable behaviours and character virtues which will support their success whilst at school and beyond, as they become adults. Wanstead High is a recent member of the Association of Character Education and in the last academic year pupils and staff have spent time exploring different virtues as outlined in the Jubilee Framework for Character Education.

In the summer term, staff and pupils voted for virtues that they believed we should aspire to demonstrate every day. These virtues also inform our shared identity as proud members of Wanstead High School.

Please take time to read through our school behaviour policy, which seeks to communicate a set of behavioural principles, expectations, standards and systems which are understood and adhered to by all within our school community.

Our aims

• To build and nurture an inclusive learning community which values kindness, mutual trust, respect and compassion for others; a community which celebrates diversity and is strengthened by its focus on positive and supportive relationships.
• To create and uphold a culture of exceptional behaviour which underpins exceptional learning and development, where all demonstrate the highest standards of work, behaviour and character.
• To ensure that all pupils, but especially those who have additional vulnerabilities, have access to the highest levels of support, so that they may thrive personally and academically within a culture of high expectation.
• To help pupils to develop their self-regulation, so that they take control and responsibility over their own behaviour and learning, and are accountable for their actions and decisions. 
• To work collaboratively with parents/carers, other professionals and the wider community, in order to teach pupils what exceptional behaviour and character looks, feels and sounds like; in different roles, contexts and environments, to enable pupils to aspire to this at all times.

Mobile Phone Policy

At Wanstead High no pupils are allowed to use or have in sight their mobile phones whilst in lessons or when moving around the school site. We currently have a tiered approach as to how this is managed, which is reviewed each year.

KS3 – Year 7 to Year 9 – Phone Collection

Pupils from Year 7 to Year 9 hand in their phone during am registration and receive them back at the end of the school day at pm registration or in detention if one has been issued. If pupils are late for school, they are expected to hand the phone in immediately on arrival at pupil reception.

Pupils are not allowed to keep their phone on their person at all. We closely monitor the collection and will contact parents, screen or, in some cases, where we feel there is a safeguarding risk, carry out a search in line with this policy.

If pupils are found to be in possession of a phone, then it will be confiscated and parents/carers may be asked to collect the phone before it is returned. Pupils will then be given an appropriate sanction depending on the circumstances.

KS4 – Year 10 and 11 – Switched off and in bags

Pupils at Key Stage 4 are expected to switch phones off and keep them in their bag at all times, they should not be seen or heard. If they are seen or found to be in use they will be confiscated, parents/carers will need to collect them to be returned.

If this becomes a persistent issue for individual pupils, they will be required to hand in their phones to their pastoral team for an extended period each morning, and they will be returned during pm registration.

KS5- Year 12 and 13 – Use in 6^th Form Centre Only

Pupils in Year 12 and 13 are allowed to use their phones in the 6^th form centre only. If found to be out or used across the site, they will be confiscated and parents/carers will need to collect them to be returned.

If this becomes a persistent issue for individual pupils, they will be required to hand in their phones to their pastoral team for an extended period each morning, and it will be returned during pm registration.

Please note that if pupils are found to be using their phones on site, outside the policy described above, the phone will be confiscated and parents/carers may be asked to collect the phone in order for it to be returned.
