Marking and Feedback

At Wanstead High School we realise the power of feedback and marking. We acknowledge that these are essential tools in the teaching and learning process, ensuring that pupils are supported, challenged and guided throughout their learning journey.

Our definition of feedback is:

‘Constructive comments highlighting strengths, areas for improvement, and specific guidance on how to enhance performance’

We believe feedback and marking has two purposes: for pupils to act on feedback and make progress overtime and to inform future planning and teaching.

Our Aims for Marking and Feedback

  • To improve pupil progress and outcomes.

  • To establish a broadly consistent approach to the way feedback and marking is offered within and across departments.

  • To ensure teaching is responsive to pupils’ needs and misconceptions are addressed.

  • To give pupils the chance to respond and consolidate (deepen) learning.

  • To make pupils aware of their strengths and areas to develop.

  • To utilise and implement marking strategies that enhance staff well-being.

As a high performing school, we ensure our teachers employ a range of effective strategies that get the best outcomes for our pupils.

Our principles for feedback are:

  • To move learning forward, use correction feedback to formatively assess pupils instantly.

  • To move learning forward at key moments within a scheme of learning, we use Feeding Forward on specific areas that lead to direct actions for pupils to respond to in green pen.

  • To move learning forward, use Live Feedback so that pupils can improve their work instantly and with teacher guidance.
